About East Melbourne

East Melbourne is located just minutes from Melbourne's CBD and is adjacent to Richmond which is home to Melbourne's Bridge Road Shopping Strip and a variety of multicultural restaurants.  A short stroll through Birrarung Marr and along the Yarra and you are at the doorstep of Federation Square with its funky bars, restaurants and innovative art stores.

Across from Wellington Parade is the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens, 26 acres of lush landscape which houses the famous Cook's Cottage. Built in England in 1755 the cottage was home to Captain Cook's parents. In 1933 a Melbourne philanthropist bought it and it was deconstructed brick by brick and packed into 253 cases and 40 barrels and was shipped to Melbourne where it now stands as an iconic tourist attraction for Victorians and Australians alike.

Along with the parklands, East Melbourne is famed for being Melbourne's sports and entertainment precinct. The MCG which lies here is the home of AFL, Melbourne's official sport, and attracts crowds of up to 100,000 on grand final day;  International Cricket playing host to the Boxing Day Test, Twenty 20, One Day matches and the Ashes series.
